Lars Lagerback's 23-man squad - Anichebe, Apam and Ikechukwu dropped

The tense moments and speculation in the media are uncalled for now, as Super Eagles technical adviser Lars Lagerback names his 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup to be staged in South Africa.

In typical Nigerian style, the tactician included Chelsea's midfielder John Mikel Obi in his final list, while Everton's striker Victor Anichebe topped the list of surprise exclusions.

Real Zaragoza's striker Ikechukwu Uche and Nice defender Onyekachi Apam, were dropped because of confirmation that their knee injuries won't heal in time for the World Cup kickoff on June 11. The following stars will be returning to their respective bases with immediate effect - Onyekachi Apam, Victor Anichebe, Ikechukwu Uche, Brown Ideye, Terna Suswan, Bassey Akpan, and Peter Utaka.

The 23-man squad:

Goalkeepers:

Vincent Enyeama (Hapoel Tel Aviv, Israel), Dele Aiyenugba (Bnei Yehuda, Israel), Austin Ejide (Hapoel Petah Tikva, Israel).

Defenders:

Taye Taiwo (Olympique Marseille, France), Elderson Echiejile (Rennes, France), Chidi Odiah (CSKA Moscow, Russia), Joseph Yobo (Everton, England), Daniel Shittu (Bolton, England), Afodele Adeleye (Spartak Rotterdam, Netherlands), Rabiu Afolabi (SV Salzburg, Austria).

Midfielders:

Kalu Uche (Almeria, Spain), Dickson Etuhu (Fulham, England), John Obi Mikel (Chelsea, England), Sani Kaita (Alania, Russia), Lukman Haruna (AS Monaco, France), Yusuf Ayila (Dynamo Kiev, Ukraine).

Attackers:

Yakubu Aiyegbeni (Everton, England), Chinedu Obasi Ogbuke (Hoffenheim TSG, Germany), Nwankwo Kanu (Portmouth, England), Obafemi Martins (Wolfsburg, Germany), Obinna Nsofor (Malaga, Spain), Osaze Odemwingie (Locomotiv Moscow, Russia).

Indeed, Anichebe is still a surprise. Is he truly injured in the knee? I still do not see what Kanu is doing in that team. His time is past. Chei!

well football loving nigerians what i expect is that if there is any criticism in regard to the 23 man list of Las, please beging to make your opinion known because it will be cawardice if after he had been flushed out of the competition you now beging to make comments like why did he not go with the injure player, why did he not include home based players...........etc. well he has relaesed his 23 man squard without consulting me so all i can wish is GOODLUCK to him and to Nigeria.

Half fit Victor Anichebe and Ike Uche is better than Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Mikel Obi and Kanu Nwankwo.

well, he is the one to select and absorb the blame for his faliure. but i dont see any reason for the inclution of kanu and mikel. all thesame, i wish niger happy turnament.
nothing new. still on old show. any ways we've just gotto wait and see wat happens there, if u know wat i mean. was actually looking foward to c smthg diffrent in midfeild.
Still the same old stuff - tired and worn-out players. And keep on-hold for the same old excuses - no enough time to play together as a team, the weather is not friendly..... and all the rubbish.

Where are the new guys the Largerback promised?

Well, i dont know what Kanu is doing there also.....
If he says some of the guys are injured and thats why he isnt using them then that makes sense dont you think,......
i just dont like the fact that we used old worn out people.
And for me, Mikel isnt even creative in midfield.... he lacks those killer passes that splits defences open.....
He is more of a holding midfielder now.... Na wetin morhino nturn am to be that.....
Anyhow, its all good.....
I dey go watch dem play friendlies for Tembisa this weekend make i see wetin dem go do.....
Lets fast and pray....
cheers guys
